Late Blight; a fungus that affects tomatoes and potatoes. It’s particularly bad this year because it thrives in wet weather. The disease caused the Irish potato famine in the 1840s and can kill a plant in a matter of weeks. If you have late blight, don’t compost or burn the infected plant because the spores will travel. To kill it, officials say put the plant in a plastic bag and throw it away. There are two commercial potato growers in Vermont and both plan to spray a fungicide to prevent infection.
Tim Schmalz is a Vermont plant pathologist tracking late blight. It turns leaves dark and dry. It’s in New Hampshire, New York and now Vermont. The plant Schmalz was examining came from a big box store in Chittenden County. To stop the spread the state ordered all infected plants destroyed. It won’t cause another famine because we rely on more crops now, but the impact could still be huge.
While late blight can cause major crop loss health officials say it does not pose a direct threat to people if you were to eat a vegetable from an infected plant, but because it looks so unappealing that’s rarely a problem.” “We live pretty far out in the country so I’m hoping some of it doesn’t spread,” Gonyo said. A shared hope for farmers already dealing with wet weather and low milk prices.

It’s not random chance that 6 banks failed in Illinois yesterday. The 6 banks were part of a larger family of banks and exposed themselves to too many bad loans.
Luckily, the FDIC found banks to take up the deposits of each of these banks, even funds that weren’t FDIC insured. So nobody lost any money inThose who had CDs at the failed banks may be losing their CD rates however. State Bank of Lincoln has said that they will honor the rates on CDs from John Warner Bank. If CD rates do change depositors have the right to withdraw their funds without incurring an early withdrawal penalty. these closures, even those who were over the FDIC limits.
Founders Bank and Rock River Bank had been offering a reward checking account with a 4.19% APY on balances up to $50,000. It’s doubtful the new owners will continue with these rates, but it’s up to them. If anybody knows how the new banks are treating the old reward checking rates or CD rates please leave a comment. It’s also interesting to note that each of these failed banks had a 1 or 2 star rating from bankrates bank soundness measure.

The Montauk Monster was no fluke. Whatever it was, it had a predecessor, perhaps many, but at least one whose discovery in a Montauk fish trap was reported by The East Hampton Star exactly 100 years ago this month. “Great excitement has been caused by the finding, in a fish trap off Montauk, of what is declared to be a sea serpent measuring 22 feet in length, having a neck six feet long and a tail about eight feet. It is considered the greatest discovery of the kind ever made on the east end of Long Island, and seems to prove beyond a doubt that the sea serpent is not a myth, as everyone supposed, but a verity.”
Funny how “experts” come out of the woodwork when something is not easily explained. When the “monster” was discovered on the beach last year, some said it proved beyond a doubt that aliens were not a myth, as everyone supposed, but a verity. Others said it proved that Plum Island experimental abominations were not a myth, nor were the horrific results of the time-travel experiments performed deep under Camp Hero on homeless urchins plucked from the streets of New York City by agents of the Montauk Project.
A more mundane explanation has lately come from a group of young men who were vacationing on Shelter Island in June of last year when they came upon a dead raccoon. Allegedly, they put the carcass in a child’s swim duck, lit it on fire, and set it afloat in order to give the animal a proper Viking burial. According to their account, currents took the scorched Viking around Montauk Point and down the coast, where it washed up in front of the Surfside restaurant — ground zero.

“We have so much preparation to do Friday for our July 4th celebration in Lake Reba Park on Saturday that it is more practical for us to give city employees the day off on Monday,” said City Manager David Evans. “In addition to the parks and recreation and tourism departments, the police, fire and public works departments are heavily involved with putting on the Independence Day event,” he said.
“We’re expecting an ever larger crowd than usual this year because Exile, which got its start in Richmond, will provide the main entertainment,” Evans said. “Lots of people are excited about the event and have called City Hall and the tourism office requesting information.” The U.S. Postal Service, which normally is open for business on Saturdays, will observe the holiday tomorrow. Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
Background
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia.[4] After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4. A day earlier, John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:“ The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.[5] ”
Adams’ prediction was off by two days. From the outset, Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date shown on the much-publicized Declaration of Independence, rather than on July 2, the date the resolution of independence was approved in a closed session of Congress.[6]
One of the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.[7][8] The myth had become so firmly established that, decades after the event and nearing the end of their lives, even the elderly Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had come to believe that they and the other delegates had signed the Declaration on the fourth.[9] Most delegates actually signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776.[10] In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two founding fathers of the United States and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence to become president, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the United States’ 50th anniversary. President James Monroe died exactly five years later, on July 4, 1831, but he was not a signatory to the Declaration of Independence.

In 1777, thirteen gunshots were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.[11]
In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.[12]
In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.[12]
In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.[12]
In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held a celebration of July 4 with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled “The Psalm of Joy”.
In 1791 the first recorded use of the name “Independence Day” occurred.
In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[13]

Customs

Independence Day is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.
Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades often are in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

A salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon by any capable military base.[15]
Major displays are held in New York on the East River, in Chicago on Lake Michigan, in San Diego over Mission Bay, in Boston on the Charles River, in St. Louis on the Mississippi River, and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival, Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, host one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate both American Independence Day and Canada Day.
While the official observance always falls on July 4th, participation levels may vary according to which day of the week the 4th falls on. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region.
Unique or historical celebrations
Originally entitled Yankee Doodle, this is one of several versions of a scene painted by A. M. Willard that came to be known as The Spirit of ‘76. Often imitated or parodied, it is a familiar symbol of American patriotism.
Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.
Since 1912, the Rebild Society, a Danish-American friendship organization, has held a July 4th weekend festival that serves as a homecoming for Danish-Americans in the Rebild section of Denmark.[16]
Since 1916, Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City supposedly started as a way to settle a dispute among four immigrants as to who was the most patriotic.
Since 1959, the International Freedom Festival is jointly held in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario during the last week of June each year as a mutual celebration of Independence Day and Canada Day (July 1). It culminates in a large fireworks display over the Detroit River.
Numerous major and minor league baseball games are played on Independence Day.
The famous Macy’s fireworks display over the East River in New York City has been televised nationwide on NBC since 1976.
Since 1970, the annual 10 kilometer Peachtree Road Race is held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Since 1973, the Boston Pops Orchestra hosts a music and fireworks show over the Charles River Esplanade. In recent years it too is televised nationwide as “Pops Goes the Fourth.”
On the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., “A Capitol Fourth,” a free concert, precedes the fireworks and attracts over half a million people annually.

Timothy Treadwell was born in Long Island, New York on April 29, 1957. He was an environmentalist documentary filmmaker and a bear enthusiast, for 13 seasons, he lived among the grizzly bears of Katmai national Park, Alaska to observe and film their lives, but at the end of 13th season a tragedy struck, Treadwell and his physician assistant girlfriend visited Katmai National Park in October of 2003. When he and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were attacked by one or may be two grizzlies’s killing them both at their campsite.
Werner Herzog made a documentary film in 2005, “grizzly Man”, the film was based on the life work of Timothy Treadwell.
Timothy Treadwell was a rehabilitated drug addict, who used to live among Grizzly’s as if they were his pets, but unfortunately, it was not the case. Katmai Park Rangers killed the male grizzly bear responsible for Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend’s death. The adult male grizzly bear was weighed 450 kg. Timothy Treadwell death video is elusive; however, a close friend of Timothy Treadwell “Jewel Palovak” has an audio tape, which contains the final moments of bear enthusiast before his death, but she has no plans to release the audio tape publicly.

Top 6 Gang Arrested In Lake Worth
Authorities this week decapitated the top tier of Palm Beach County’s notorious Top 6 gang, arresting 11 men whose crimes ranged from attempted murder to robberies and cocaine distribution.
The operation dealt a significant blow to the leadership of the criminal group whose members have been connected to 150 shootings and at least 14 homicides in Palm Beach County, authorities said. Top 6, which began as a small rap group in Lake Worth and thrived until it became one of the most criminally successful- and brutal- gangs in South Florida, may see an erosion in its capabilities because of the landmark sweep, authorities said.
The arrests marked just the second time that the RICO statute- once used to nab mobsters like those in the Bonanno, Colombo and Lucchese crime families- was used on street gang members in the county.
“This is part of the nucleus of the group, top-tier guys,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Wallace, who’s violent crimes task force was one of 13 local, state and federal agencies collaborating in the investigation. “We’ve hurt them.”
The arrests, which stemmed from indictments handed down from a statewide grand jury investigation, netted eleven Top 6 members in Boynton Beach and Lake Worth on racketeering and other charges.
Those charged were ringleader Futo Charles, 27, and Carlington Gordon, 23, who were already in Palm Beach County Jail. John Jerome, 25, and Smith Dort, 21, were in state prison. Thomy Thomas, 26, Daniello Olius, 29, Ernst Exavier, 24, Jessee Thomas, 22, Wilson Gilles, 20, and Danel Jerome, 21, were all arrested on the streets Thursday night. Wilbertson Noelzinord was arrested Friday morning.
Bail for each of the eight defendants in court Friday morning was set at $1 million on the racketeering charges. Some defendants are also charged with additional crimes that increased their bail by a few thousand dollars.
The judge also ordered that the defendants provide proof that their bail money comes from a legal source before it can be posted.
The first wave of arrests stemming from the investigation came in December, when 10 members of the Sur 13 gang based in the Westgate neighborhood in suburban West Palm Beach were swept up on racketeering charges.
As part of the racketeering case against the alleged Top 6 members, investigators listed 85 crimes dating back to 2002 affiliated with the gang. They are predominantly drug and gun charges and violence against law enforcement officers.
Top 6 has grown to include about 350 members who control at least 10 predominantly Haitian or Haitian-American neighborhood-based gangs in Lake Worth, Riviera Beach, West Palm Beach, Lantana and Boynton Beach. The gang has also spread to Miami, Orlando and Tallahassee.
Top 6 has been linked to some of the counties most violent crimes, like the killing of Berno Charlemond, 24, shot to death at the Boynton Beach Mall on Christmas Eve 2006, and a March 2007 backyard massacre in which three men were killed and four others critically wounded in the rear of a Lake Worth home.
“These are guys that ruin family’s lives, ” said sheriff’s office Col. Michael Gauger.
Investigators built the case under Florida’s racketeering statute, known as RICO, which has been used to take down mobsters but has become a weapon against street gangs. It allows for stiffer penalties for crimes committed as part of an organized group.
“Most of these gang members don’t even know how to spell Rico,” said FDLE special agent Mike Driscoll. “They don’t know what it is.”
Who they are:
*Futo Charles, 27, described as a Top 6 “ringleader” and “enforcer” by authorities, has done prison time for a range of drug offenses. Last July, he allegedly tried to shoot and kill Lucius Brown, 23, after Brown fought with Top 6 members about territory two days earlier.
*Carlington Gordon, 23, allegedly shot at another gang member’s house in suburban West Palm Beach.
*Thomy Thomas, 26, and two other Top 6 members were stabbed outside a Lake Worth night club in January 2005 as part of a gang dispute.
*Daniello Olius, 29, served nearly two years in prison for drug and robbery offenses.
*Ernst Exavier, 24, was one of three men stabbed during a brawl outside a Lake Worth bar in December 2004.
*Smith Dort, 21, has a history of robbery and drug offenses and is currently in prison for trying to escape while he was a prisoner.
*Jessee Thomas, 22, has a history of weapon and drug arrests.
*John Jerome, 25, is imprisoned on a weapons charge and for fleeing from law enforcement.
*Wilson Gilles, 20, is on probation for gun and drug arrests.
*Danel Jerome, 21, has a history of burglary, gun and drug arrests.
*Wilbertson Noelzinord, 22, was shot during a March 2007 backyard massacre in which three men were killed and four others critically wounded in Lake Worth.

the night before he died, and there are 20,000 seats. Service will be held between 10am and noon. To the funeral will also attend family and friends who will be seated on the front row.
